Information About Key Terms and Pieces of the AHS Drama Program

Atholton High School (AHS) Drama includes students taking drama as a class as well as students involved in the Drama department’s productions and activities. AHS Drama produces two major productions a year - -a non-musical play in the fall and a musical in the spring. Drama department productions include and student who sew costumes, build sets, run the sound and lighting system, design posters, programs, and tickets, and assist with front of the house activities. Any student interested in learning more about AHS Drama should visit the Bulletin Board located on the Drama Hall next to the auditorium and should try to attend student department meetings or speak with Mr. Rosen.

In addition to the major productions, AHS students perform in both festivals and showcases. AHS also participates in the Baltimore Area Cappies.

Cappies: We’re part of the Cappies of Baltimore, a critics and awards program that involves students writing reviews of high school plays.  Students in our reviewed production are then eligible for awards presented at the year-end, glitzy Gala.  There are opportunities for students to be critics and for parents and students to support our program on Cappies night and with the Gala. Students wishing to be critics should speak with Mr. Rosen. For more information about CAPPIES go to the CAPPIES page CAPPIES or www.cappies.com/bal/main.html

MD High School Theater Festival: A two-day theater festival held in February. The Festival includes workshops, performances, and specialty training, as well as college information. Students may prepare scenes to present, compete for scholarships, or just go and enjoy. Students taking drama classes and those interested in becoming more involved in drama activities should consider attending. Bus transportation is provided from AHS.

Festival Schmestival: This is a special evening performance of all student material which will be presented at the Theater Festival. It is a good showcase of the different type of drama work done by our students. The community is invited to attend.

Shakespeare Festival: Students from all over the DC metro area perform Shakespeare on the Folger stage in a festival lasting seven days and involving 56 schools. A selected AHS drama class prepares an abbreviated version of a Shakespeare play to perform.

One Night Only: Current student work is highlighted in this special evening showcase. The Shakespeare play presented at the Folger Library, students’ scenes and monologues, and pieces students have used to compete for scholarships are performed. The community is invited to attend.

Drama Banquet: All students who either participated in one of the Drama department’s productions or who took Drama class are encouraged to attend this end of the year celebration. A pot-luck dinner is held in the cafeteria, followed by an awards ceremony in the auditorium. The awards ceremony includes presentation of Cappies medals to nominees, bestowing of Thespian society memberships, and granting of awards to numerous students.

AHS Drama Boosters: For parents and friends wishing to support the AHS Drama program, there is AHS Drama Boosters. This organization assists the drama department by fundraising, serving as chaperones, and lending skilled assistance when necessary. If interested in learning more about AHS Drama Boosters please contact Robyn Gold (jen90mat4@aol.com) or Cathy Romeo (cathyromeo@comcast.net), co-presidents at atholtondrama@yahoo.com.

2005-2006 Recap

We had a great year. Our spring musical, Hello Dolly! was a wonderful production with two very talented casts - pictures will be coming soon. The fall production of As You Like It was a huge success. Check out the photos As You Like It photos and reviews Atholton's As You Like It  Atholton had 14 CAPPIES nomination! In addition, we had two entertaining nights of drama  - Festival, Schmestival and One Night Only! We also had a lot of fun at the first night of student productions and improv - Saturday Night Live!

Students participated and won awards in the Maryland State Theater Festival and the Shakespeare Festival at Folgers Theater. We went as a group to the Renaissance Festival to see one of our own students perform. And, we went to New York to see a very talented cast in the broadway production of Lestat.

At the Grand Finale, our banquet and awards ceremony, we said good-bye to a group of amazing seniors who will be sorely missed and ushered in a new group of students into the International Thespian Society. Overall it was a fantastic year. The Boosters sponsored an extremely successful Flower & Plant Sale and two restaurant fundraisers. We incorporated  and worked on bylaws and voted in a new slate of officers (see below.)

None of this could have happened if students, parents, and the Atholton High School Drama Director, Mr. Nathan Rosen did not work together in a collaborative effort. New parents join us. Now, we begin planning for next year....

Thank you to everyone who devoted their time, energy, and creativity.
