HARVEY

Merrily We Roll Along

Performances Nov. 9-12, 2006

Performances March 1-4, 2007

by Mary Chase

Words & Music by Stephen Sondheim, Book by George Furth

Harvey is the charming comedy about Elwood P. Dowd, a very pleasant man who wants to be friends with everyone he meets, including Harvey, a six foot tall, invisible talking rabbit.  This behavior causes so much trouble for his conventional sister Veta that she tries to have Elwood committed—but the doctors think she’s crazy.  And the odd thing is, when Elwood says that Harvey is around, strange things start to happen…as if someone really was there. In the wonderful 1950 movie version, Jimmy Stewart played Elwood and was nominated for an Academy Award.      Frank, Charlie, and Mary were just starting out as artists in New York City in the late 1950s.  Frank wrote music, Charlie wrote the words, and their friend Mary wrote stories.  As the years went by, they became very successful professionally, but the friends drifted apart.  The musical begins in 1977, and goes backward in time, each scene reaching further back in time, revealing more and more about the characters.  Featuring the song “Our Time,” and other brilliant songs by Sondheim (who also wrote Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd and the lyrics for West Side Story), this musical will be our Cappies’ production.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT MUSICALS:

Some of you sing well (or very well).  Some do not sing well yet.  Most leading roles in musicals (and some supporting roles) require solo singing.  More than 90% of people improve their singing with instruction and practice.  Singing with a choir is a VERY good idea.  Ours is available to you during lunch, if you choose to get involved.  Find a choir and join it.  There are also many fine voice teachers in the area.  Ambitious people should work on their voices.   Some people will have the leading roles, guys… will it be you?
